<img src="https://www.kids-earth-science.com/images/pe4-earth-crust.jpg" width="500" height="300" alt="Example of Advertisement">
The Crust is the uppermost layer of the Earth, and is the layer that we live on. It is gritty and is a solid. It is made up mostly of Oxygen, Silicon, and Aluminum. It's quite thin compared to the other layers, with the oceanic crust coming in at an average 6 miles (10 kilometers) and the continental crust at a much beefier average of 18 miles (30 kilometers). The Crust is the coolest layer of the Earth, the temperature of which varies from 392°F (200°C) to 752°F (400°C).
Start ExploringThe Mantle
<img src="https://ontherocksgeoblog.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/1_earthlayers_nature.jpg" width="500" height="300" alt="Example of Advertisement">
The Mantle is below the Crust but above the Upper Core. It's state of matter is neither solid, liquid, or gas, but more like hot plastic. It is mostly made up of Olivine, Garnet, and Magnesium Oxide. The Mantle is the thickest layer, with an average thickness of 1,802 miles (2,900 kilometers) and takes a whopping 84% of the Earth's volume! The Mantle is hotter than the crust, yet cooler than the Inner and Outer Core, with varying temperature of 1832° Fahrenheit (1000°C) near its boundary with the crust, and up to 6692° Fahrenheit (3,700°C) near it boundary with the Outer Core, because in the Mantle, heat and pressure generally increase as the depth increases.
Start ExploringThe Outer Core
<img src="https://b7aaronbrody.weebly.com/uploads/2/3/9/8/23985159/111528.jpg?1380594739" width="500" height="300" alt="Example of Advertisement">
The Outer Core is below the Crust and the Mantle, but above the Inner Core. It's state of matter is liquid. It is mostly made up of Iron and Nickel. It's not as thick as the Mantle, yet thicker than the Crust and Inner Core, with an average thickness of 1,367 miles (2,200 kilometers). It is VERY hot, with an average temperature of 9,000°F (5,500°C), yet still not as hot as the inner core!
Start ExploringThe Inner Core
The Inner Core is the center of the Earth, and is the hottest layer. It's state of matter is suprisingly, solid! It is also made up of mostly Iron, and Nickel. After the Crust, the Inner Core is the thinnest layer around, with an average thickness of just around 800 miles (1,300 Kilometers).
The Inner Core is 9,392°F (5,200°C), the surface temperature of the sun!
